Adoptive Parent Training Series
With research and development funded in part by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, these 4 training series were designed specifically for the parents of the estimated 1.5 million adopted children in the United States. The DVDs also address critical issues for foster parents. The DVDs are sold individually or as a complete set.
Adoption has undergone dramatic changes in the past 30 years, due largely to the complexity of contemporary adoptive relationships, which increasingly involve international, multi-ethnic, multi-racial, and foster care placements. Adoptive and foster youth experience consistently high rates of behavior problems and psychological maladjustments. These issues occur at a disproportionately higher rate than among non-adoptive youth. Parenting competence is the primary mediating factor in reversing this trend.
How does an adoptive parent respond when their child asks, “Will I ever meet my birth mom?”
Many adoptive parents are counseled by agencies to learn the skills necessary to discuss difficult topics. The Adoptive Parent Training DVD Series is a research-based media program, which incorporates video and additional printable materials to help adoptive parents develop skills for communicating with their children.

Communication - Telling the Story
Explores how parents and children can have healthy communication when talking about adoption. These videos are a good resource to learn the language of adoption and help adoptive parents feel comfortable communicating with others about adoption. Available in quantities of 1, 5 or 10 sets.
Creating Family
Helps prospective adoptive parents consider the emotional, ethical, financial and legal implications of adopting a child. Parents learn how to prepare for the arrival of a new child into their home and consider the emotional, physical, and medical issues that come with that transition. Available in quantities of 1, 5 or 10 sets.
Race, Culture, and Identity
Helps multiracial and multicultural adoptive families consider how to talk about race, embrace different cultures and form healthy racial identities. Includes interviews with adoptees and adoptive parents discussing racial identity. Available in quantities of 1, 5 or 10 sets.
Developing Communication Skills
Provides an introduction to the issues concerning parent communication about adoption. Specific examples of open communication about adoption and how to create a healthy atmosphere for the adoptive family and friends. Available in quantities of 1, 5 or 10 sets.
